To encourage us to support our local businesses and, in our case, keep our money in Shetland, local businesses are offering something special on “Small Business Saturday”.

Small Business Saturday is a UK-wide, grassroots campaign that aims to recognise that small, local businesses are frequently overlooked in this internet-dominated age, even though they contribute more to communities in terms of jobs and the economy than big business overall. “Small Business Saturday” exists to inspire, promote and support small businesses right across the UK.

Shetland is packed full of truly amazing small businesses, with just about everything you could possible need available right here. Shetland businesses are getting involved with the campaign and various businesses in the town centre are offering their customers special deals on 5th December. The Living Lerwick website has a page detailing the various offers from Aurora Gifts, The Peerie Shop, M&Co, the Camera Centre and more.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), Living Lerwick, Business Gateway, HIE Shetland and our local MSP all support Small Business Saturday.

Christena Irvine (FSB Shetland Vice Chair and Living Lerwick Manager) said: “If we can all work together to promote all that Shetland’s many small businesses have to offer, and to encourage everyone we know to shop locally, we might change some habits and generate real, lasting benefits for our businesses and our community.

Federation of Small Businesses research suggests that £1 spent with local small businesses is worth an additional 63p to the Shetland economy. It is a fantastic way of supporting local businesses and our community and ties in nicely with the FSB’s “Keep Trade Local” and Real Life Entrepreneurs” campaigns as well as the vision of Living Lerwick.”
