The festive season is taking shape in the town centre. The Living Lerwick Christmas lights have been hung up along the street and are ready for the big switch-on parade on Saturday 28th November at 3.30pm.

Due to popular demand, there will also be a big Norwegian Christmas tree bought by the town centre businesses through Living Lerwick and shipped free of charge by Northlink and Northwards. The tree has been erected at the Market Cross by the Council’s Roads Service and Living Lerwick have decorated it with new lights funded by Lerwick Community Council.

There are also five smaller trees in Living Lerwick’s brand new planters situated at Shetland Times Bookshop, Harrison Square and Harry’s Department Store. Living Lerwick received funding for these through the Community Development Fund and the planters have been made locally by students on the Council’s Bridges project.

Businesses in the town centre are getting their festive window displays ready. They will be competing for the title of best Christmas themed window display. A public vote, co-ordinated by Living Lerwick will open from Saturday the 28th November until Monday 7th December, so have a look and vote for your favourite.

The Living Lerwick magical Christmas light switch-on parade will kick off with Santa arriving at Victoria Pier on the lifeboat to lead the parade at 3.30pm on Saturday 28th November. The Peerie Foxes nursery bairns will follow Santa and switch on the Christmas lights (provided by the businesses in the area through Living Lerwick) with their magic wands as they pass. This year’s Jarl Squad will be out as part of the parade and the brass band will provide music as the parade progresses.

The parade starts at Victoria Pier, travels up Church Road, turns into Commercial Street, down Burns Walk, along the Esplanade and finishes up at the Market Cross, where we will switch on the Christmas tree lights and have some Christmas music from the Brass Band. Road closures will be in place from 3pm to 4.30pm Commercial Street (from Church Road to Commercial Road) and the Esplanade (from the Harbour Street junction to the Market Cross).

Most of the town centre businesses have extended opening hours and a list of dates and times is available. There are also lots of events and special offers available from the businesses. These and all other details and updates are listed on the Living Lerwick website, and Facebook page.

Come along and have some festive fun in your town centre.
