There’s something truly special about Lerwick town centre in the summer. As the days grow longer and the sun (hopefully!) shines a little more often, the heart of our town comes alive with colour and charm—thanks to the beautiful floral displays and cheerful bunting decorating our streets.
These touches don’t just appear by magic. Every hanging basket, flower tubs, and colourful triangle of bunting is part of a coordinated effort to make Lerwick a welcoming, enjoyable place to visit, shop, and spend time in.
Who makes it happen?
The summer decorations are made possible by the businesses in our town centre, who collectively fund this annual initiative. Whether it’s your favourite café, a go-to shop, or a family-run business you pass every day, they’ve all chipped in to bring a little extra joy to Lerwick Town Centre.
Organised by Living Lerwick – Your Town Centre BID
The installation and upkeep are coordinated by Living Lerwick, the Business Improvement District (BID) for Lerwick town centre. As a BID, our role is to support local businesses and improve the town centre experience for everyone—residents, visitors, and business owners alike.
From arranging the planters to getting the bunting up across Commercial Street and beyond, Living Lerwick handles the planning and organisation to help showcase our town at its best.
More Than Just Flowers
It’s not just summer that benefits from this community effort. The bairns’ trails during school holidays (Easter trails/Halloween/Christmas Elf hunt/Treasure hunt etc), town centre events, and the much-loved Christmas lights and parade are all also funded by the businesses within the town centre and organised by Living Lerwick. These events bring joy to local families, boost footfall for businesses, and make Lerwick a magical place to be throughout the year.
So next time you’re out and about, take a moment to look up at the bunting fluttering above, admire the flowers spilling from hanging baskets, and know that it’s all part of a year-round effort by your local businesses to keep Lerwick vibrant and welcoming.
