LOCUS

For many people, the idea of counselling begins with one simple need: to be heard. For the founder of Lighthouse Counselling Shetland, that belief and a genuine love of connecting with people, was the spark that led to the business being created.

Inspired by connection

“I really enjoy connecting with people,” Claire explains. “There feels like a disconnect in society at times, and I believe everyone should have access to a safe, confidential space where they can be supported to process anything they may be going through in life”. That belief naturally led to an interest in counselling, and ultimately to the creation of Lighthouse Counselling Shetland, a place where people can speak openly without judgement and feel truly supported.

A calm, supportive space to talk

At Lighthouse Counselling Shetland, clients are welcomed into a safe, confidential, and nurturing environment where they can feel heard, valued and understood. As a fully qualified, person-centred counsellor, the approach is gentle, supportive and led at the client’s own pace.

Support is available for a wide range of life challenges, including stress, anxiety, relationship difficulties, major life changes, and grief and loss. Claire has a specialist interest in bereavement counselling, offering deep understanding and compassion to those navigating the pain of losing a loved one.

Lighthouse Counselling Shetland also provides support for individuals who are nearing the end of life, as well as for their families and loved ones. This work offers a listening ear and a safe space to explore thoughts and feelings during an intensely personal and emotional time.

At the heart of the counselling approach is the belief that you are the expert in your own life. The role of the counsellor is to walk alongside you, offering empathy, understanding, and a steady light through difficult moments.

Clients are welcomed into a warm, comfortable room at The Mission in Lerwick, a setting that offers both calm and reassurance. “We all need shelter from life’s storms from time to time and you would be very welcome here.”

Why Lerwick town centre?

Choosing to locate the service in Lerwick town centre was a carefully considered decision. Convenience for clients was key, as well as a real love for the character and nature of The Mission building itself.

Being centrally located means clients may already be coming into town for everyday reasons, allowing them to visit discreetly and comfortably without feeling self-conscious. The building is welcoming and private, offering peace of mind to those seeking support.

A warm welcome

Since opening, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “Everyone at The Mission has been amazing , so supportive and welcoming,” .

The benefits of a central hub

Operating from the town centre brings many advantages. Lerwick is the hub of Shetland, making the service easily accessible for people across the islands. With nearby parking options and familiar surroundings, it offers practical ease at a time when clients may already be carrying emotional weight.

Looking to the future

Looking ahead, Lighthouse Counselling Shetland has plans to expand the services offered. Appointments for children will be opening very soon, alongside new specialist support including pet bereavement counselling and end-of-life counselling.

These additions reflect a deep commitment to meeting people where they are, and supporting them through all stages of life and loss.

One thing you might not know…

Away from counselling, there’s a love for all things old-fashioned. An “old soul” at heart, the founder has a passion for antiques, historic buildings, and learning about how life used to be – with a secret soft spot for old Shetland milk bottles.
