LOCUS

Lerwick’s town centre has no shortage of character, but one much-loved local business has recently turned heads with a stylish new look—both inside and out. After years of planning (and a certain global event getting in the way), this iconic public house has had a well-earned facelift, and we caught up with the owners to hear all about it.

Why now?

“The idea had been brewing for a while,” the owners explained. “We had planned internal and external improvements some time ago, but the small matter of a worldwide lurgy put everything on hold.” Like any business, especially in hospitality, keeping up with changing trends and customer expectations is crucial—and the team were determined to do just that.

Planning makes perfect

The facelift was far from spontaneous. “It took a little longer than we would have liked,” they admitted, “but taking the time to do it in stages meant we could plan it properly.” That thoughtful approach is reflected in every detail of the final result.

A creative local collaboration

For the design work, the team turned to a trusted local creative: Artmachine. “We’ve worked with them on various bits and bobs before, so we already knew how creative they are. A simple choice, really.”

Together, they developed a vision rooted in the building’s rich heritage. “We started by delving into the history of the building,” the owners explained. “It may look a little more modern now, but it began life as one of Lerwick’s iconic lodberries, and a public house was first established here back in 1886. That history helped shape the whole new look—and we think we hit the nail on the head.”

Smooth sailing, with local help

Any renovation comes with challenges, but the process was made easier thanks to a truly local effort. “There were a few peerie hurdles, but it was all very smooth. Local trades businesses, council planning staff, and even our own team all played a part. They were a joy to work with.”

What stands out most?

“We really like the overall impact, inside and out,” the owners said. “But we especially love a comfy seat!” And while there’s plenty of fresh design to enjoy, they made sure to keep some original features too. “Old buildings can be tricky to alter, so much of the interior remains. The iconic u-shaped bar had to stay. Lots of fixtures and fittings are still very functional, so we softened the changes and adapted where needed.”

The verdict from the community?

“The feedback has been heartwarming,” they shared. “It makes the investment feel worthwhile. Shetland businesses work hard to improve their spaces and services, and our social media channels have been full of lovely comments.”

Celebrating Shetland service

The final word goes to the people who helped make the transformation happen: “Working with local businesses has been first class. Artmachine’s visual work is fantastic, and all the local builders, heating engineers, electricians and others gave us exceptional service throughout.”

This project is a brilliant example of how thoughtful design, a nod to heritage, and strong local collaboration can breathe new life into our town centre. Next time you're walking through Lerwick, stop by, take in the new look—and maybe grab a comfy seat too (and a beer, of course)!
