LOCUS

What do you enjoy most about running a business in a small community like Lerwick?

“That it is a community! Most of the business owners and staff know each other and generally try to support each other to make the street a place people want to visit.”

What inspired you to start your business?

“For us, it wasn’t so much about starting the business but keeping it going! Jamieson’s has always been about continuing Shetland’s wool tradition and making sure it thrives for the future.”

What makes Lerwick town centre special to you?

“People occasionally lament the lack of ‘big’ chain shops in Lerwick, but I love the fact that everything is unique and different—yet you can still buy everything you need. It’s what makes the town centre special.”

How does your business try to support the local community?

“Every gram of wool we process is grown here in the isles—that’s the very basis of our ethos. We also source as much as we can locally for things like repairs, packaging, and printing. Beyond that, we support the community by sponsoring Westside Sharks and Shetland Amateur Athletics competitions, and we frequently donate to fundraising raffles and auctions.”

What’s one thing you’d love people to know about your shop or service?

“That everything we sell is fully manufactured in the isles! From fleece to finished product, it’s all done here in Shetland, keeping the tradition alive.”

Jamieson’s of Shetland is a brilliant example of how local businesses keep Shetland’s traditions and community spirit strong. Another fantastic reason to love local and support small businesses in Lerwick town centre.
