LOCUS

This week in our Scotland Loves Local series, we’re featuring Avril Thomson Smith Art, a Shetland-based multi-award-winning Scottish landscape artist.

About the Business
Avril loves opening her gallery each day knowing she is sharing her artwork with the community, giving them a special piece of Shetland. Being part of Lerwick’s town centre community is truly heartwarming. No two days are the same, and every day brings new and exciting challenges—there’s never a dull moment. Her artwork draws inspiration from the dramatic scenery, old croft houses, and beautiful wildflowers found in Shetland.

Why the Business Was Started
Born in 1975 on the most northerly island in the UK, Avril’s childhood was full of freedom and adventure. She loved visiting her grandparents’ croft in the Southend, exploring the remote countryside, and enjoying the quiet crofting lifestyle. After a 20-year career in the Business Department at Shetland College, Avril decided to embrace her passion for art. During Covid, she spent many hours developing her artistic skills, inspired by country walks and the croft houses she loves. She gave up her teaching position at UHI Shetland and purchased her gallery—a true dream come true.

Why Lerwick Town Centre is Special
Lerwick town centre is a beautiful location with friendly people, small shops, cafés, and bars. Being next to the sea adds an extra charm, with views of boats, and even the occasional seal or orca. Avril enjoys the buzz of the town and the sense of community it offers.

Supporting the Local Community
Avril Thomson Smith Art provides handmade, unique items that are purchased as gifts, bringing joy to customers. She also donates many raffle prizes to local charities, children’s sports, and leisure groups, helping to support the wider community.

What Makes the Business Unique
All of Avril’s artwork is inspired by Shetland scenery and real croft houses. The gallery produces limited edition prints, coasters, mugs, pens, and hand-made ceramic croft houses. Everything is framed and packaged in the workshop with care, and each item is made with love, reflecting Avril’s passion for Shetland art. Her Scottish landscapes appeal to audiences worldwide, bringing a piece of Shetland’s dramatic scenery into homes near and far.
