LOCUS

This week in our Scotland Loves Local series, we’re featuring R.A.M, a unique mother-and-daughter knitwear business in the heart of Lerwick town centre. Roisin designs and makes every piece in the Bressay studio, while Rosie welcomes customers into the shop on Commercial Street.

About the Business
For Rosie, the best part of running R.A.M is the connection. She loves getting to know people—chatting with tourists, welcoming visitors, and building friendships with fellow business owners. She also values the safe, supportive environment of Lerwick town centre, where camaraderie between shops makes every day enjoyable.

Why RAM Was Started
Roisin’s journey didn’t begin in Shetland. After completing her studies in London, she moved to the islands and began selling her knitwear designs at local halls and craft events. Over time, her passion for creating unique, contemporary designs grew, and in March 2020 she opened her own shop on Commercial Street.

Why Lerwick Town Centre is Special
Roisin & Rosie love that Lerwick is full of independent shops—something increasingly rare in many towns. From quirky finds to unique local treasures, Lerwick’s mix of businesses makes it a truly special place to work and shop.

Supporting the Local Community
R.A.M proudly supports the community in many ways. The business sponsors Peerie Makers, a charity advancing arts, heritage, culture, and education—particularly Shetland’s textile traditions. Staying open all year round ensures both locals and visitors can enjoy contemporary knitwear that brings a modern twist to Shetland’s world-famous craft.

What Makes R.A.M Unique
Everything in R.A.M is designed by Roisin and made in Shetland at the Bressay studio. Using state-of-the-art Shima Seiki machines, each piece combines quality craftsmanship with modern technology.
