About the Business
Robertson & Son first opened its doors in 1947. From those early days, the business steadily expanded to meet the changing needs of Shetland – from transport services for the gas plant and local bus contracts, to more recently, the growing tourism market after Covid. Today, Robertson & Son plays a vital role in keeping people and visitors moving across the islands.

Community Connections
When we met with Alex, Operations Manager at Robertsons, he told us that camaraderie is one of the best parts of running a business here in Lerwick. Businesses support one another, and being in the tourism sector allows them to introduce visitors to other brilliant local companies. “It’s great working with people face-to-face rather than just on emails or phone calls,” he explained.

The company supports the community in many ways – from getting people to school and work each day, to offering tours that bring new visitors (and their spending power) to Shetland. They also sponsor local groups and charities, ensuring their success is shared with the wider community.

Why Lerwick?
For Alex and the team, Lerwick town centre is special because it has everything you need – a real sense of community, plenty of choice, and the convenience of not needing to leave the island to find essentials. It’s a place that combines practicality with pride.

What They’d Love You to Know
Robertson & Son isn’t just about transport – it’s about opportunities. They provide training and employment for those interested in transport and tourism, and work with local youth employability groups to encourage young people to get involved in the industry.

With a history stretching back nearly 80 years, Robertson & Son continues to be a trusted name in Shetland – connecting people, supporting tourism, and investing in the community.
