Shetland Islands Council has identified improving data communication services across the Isles as one of its key targets. To help meet this aspiration the SIC has set up the Shetland Telecom Project. Its remit is to improve data communications.

The Shetland Telecom Project was established in 2009 to undertake a significant step change in telecoms provision in Shetland.

The project has successfully achieved the provision of resilient, reliable, high capacity data services for Shetland.

The project is part of Shetland Islands Council’s Economic Development Unit.

The fibre optic network which it now manages was part funded by the EU.

The Shetland Telecom Project is a member of the Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) and the Independent Network Cooperative Association (INCA).
