Living Lerwick, acting on behalf of town centre businesses, coordinates the tree’s journey from its supplier in England to Shetland. This significant task is made possible through the generous support of Northwards and NorthLink, who provide haulage and freight services; Shetland Islands Council, who assist in erecting the tree; and Garriock Bros, who support Living Lerwick contractors with installing the lights.

Additionally, Northwards and NorthLink deliver three trees gifted from Norway, which will be displayed at Lerwick Town Hall, Scalloway, and Whalsay, further enhancing the seasonal spirit across the islands.

Steve Mathieson, Chairman of Living Lerwick, shared his excitement, saying, “The arrival of the Christmas tree and lights brings a real sense of magic to the town centre. It’s a wonderful example of community effort, with Northwards, NorthLink, Shetland Islands Council, and Garriock Bros helping us make it happen. We hope everyone enjoys the festive atmosphere while supporting our local shops this Christmas.”

Living Lerwick has planned a range of Christmas activities throughout December. Kicking off with Santa’s arrival aboard the Lerwick Lifeboat during the parade on 30th November, the festivities continue with the Naughty Elf Hunt, Christmas Window Competition, and a Winter Wonderland Grotto at the old RSM offices beside Harry’s.

Santa’s Grotto will be open on the weekends of 7th/8th and 14th/15th December, from 11 am to 4 pm each day.
