Living Lerwick held a treasure hunt competition along-side Up Helly Aa where 15 shops displayed a “tattie jarl” in their window from 28 January to 3 February.
Events leader, Steve Mathieson, said: “We wanted to help bring Up Helly Aa to the street in a way that was fun for everyone. Kids have always loved our treasure hunts in the past and this time the tattie Jarl was also something for the parents to enjoy. We would like to thank Ivor Cluness for allowing us to use his picture in this way!”
All of the entries received were collated and the winner was chosen at random by Steve. The winner was Stacie Hughes and her daughter Hannah (age 4) who received £80 worth of vouchers from the participating shops: Boots, Specsavers, M&Co, J G Rae, Ninian, George Robertson Ltd, Scottish Hydro, Da Fish Bowl, Camera Centre, Anderson & Co, Smith & Robertson, North Rock Gallery, A L Laing and Biyoni. Hannah also received one of Visit Shetland’s new Up Helly Aa t-shirts! Stacie will be donating the vouchers to be a raffle prize for the Close Shave event to raise money for Cancer Research:
“Hannah and I had a good afternoon in town hunting down the Tattie Jarl’s: Hannah thought they were very funny and couldn’t wait to find them all. It’s nice to have something in the town centre to entertain kids while parents do their shopping. I am a big supporter of Cancer Research so have chosen to donate the vouchers to the Close Shave fund raising event so they can be used as a raffle prize.”
As there were a few entries from people who had been visiting Shetland for Up Helly Aa, it was decided to choose a runner up winner from them. Rosaleen Bruce from Johnshaven was selected. A souvenir Up Helly Aa badge and Shetland window sticker were donated by Visit Shetland and posted to her.
